This morning I had the opportunity to attend Grand Valley State University's 18th annual Leadership Summit. The summit consisted of four individually chosen breakout sessions along with dinner featuring a keynote speaker. This conference offered two distinct networking opportunities. First, I had the chance to meet students from colleges and universities across the state including, Madonna, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Davenport, Olivet, Baker, and Grand Rapids Community. In addition to networking with students across the state I also had the chance to attend a breakout session dedicated to learning how to network. During this post I really want to discuss my experience with that breakout session titled "Networking Techniques for Professional Success". During this session I learned a lot of information about successful networking including how to network, where to network, and how to get the most out of the networks you have. One of the most important things I learned during this session was to utilize multiple channels in different ways. For example you may want to use Linked-in to connect online with a professional you just met in person, while Facebook might tell you some of there favorite hangouts where you might just run into them again. Additionally I learned that every situation is a place to network. People you meet in church, in class, and even at the gym may be key people your network is lacking. Don't be afraid to start small, connect with potential networks online first and see where that goes. Many personal and business blogs have a connect with me option which you can use to start the connection (you can find mine in the upper right corner of my page).
