This week we began our final presentations. Our assignment was to give a 10 minute presentation (accompanied by some form of media presentation) to review what we liked, didn't like, learned, and struggled with during our semester in CAP 105. It was really interesting to see what everyone else struggled and succeeded in compared to me. I also found it really interesting that some people hated projects I loved and vice versa. Below you can see my entire powerpoint presentation with the details on how I felt about CAP 105, however if you just want the rundown Ill give it to you now. Basically I loved getting to be creative, making an infographic with Piktochart was one of my favorite assignments! On the other end of the spectrum I hated the SEO and online management systems we used like Brand Yourself. Walking out of this class I am leaving with a new appreciation for branding myself, so look out for Amber Layn Miller, because one day I will make it big! I apologize in for any and all formatting errors that arose from putting my PowerPoint online. My final cut movie creation would not upload via my PowerPoint, however you can view it in its original blog post here. Pictures come from a combination of my work with Photoshop, Piktochart, Final Cut Pro X and Brand Yourself.

When was the last time you took a look at your resume? If its looking a little traditional, it may be time for an update! I recently applied for some new job positions and was shocked at how boring my old resume was! Before renovating your resume design, I suggest checking out a list of resume tips to make sure you have your content down. Then think about your profession. Is your career path one that strives for creativity, or precision. I am looking to go into marketing and advertising when I graduate, so adding a little pop of color and a monogram offers just a pinch of creativity, which is likely to stand out to the advertising companies who would be looking to hire me. Make sure however you renovate your resume, you stay true to you!
Did you know the cloud is used for more than just storing your data? Before class this week, I didn't. I thought the virtual cloud was a device for purely storing music, pictures and documents, but it is so much more! One of the best examples of more than storage I can think of is Adobe's Creative Cloud. Aside from storing your data, subscribing to the Creative Cloud gives you access to the entire Adobe Creative Suite wherever you are! With the Adobe Creative Cloud customers can start a project on their desktop, take it to their laptop, and then to their mobile for only one monthly cost instead of purchasing it separately for each system. I really like having that kind of flexibility, plus with the storage space they give you I might just have to try it! Every week the GVSU Honors College sends me a newsletter about whats happening on campus. This week I noticed something I am very excited for: $5 Head-shots! Next week on Tuesday and Wednesday from 11am-3pm in Kirkhof (Room 1142 on Tuesday and 2264 on Wednesday) nine photography students will be taking head-shots for only $5 in an effort to raise money for a conference in New Orleans. Come in business attire and the students will take, edit, and email you the professional photo you've always needed. Finally some head-shots I can afford!
On Tuesday my class watched a video on the possibilities of photoshop. Let me start by saying I was amazed! I have never messed around in photoshop before and after watching that video I am kind of intimidated. The video got me very interested in graphic designs and the possibilities I have if I can get good at the software! Below you will find an awesome example of what photoshop can do by Alexander Koshelkov. For todays blog I wanted to take a second to discuss something I read on another blog. It discussed the notion of advertisers "Pre-Gamming" for the Super Bowl. This includes launching partial campaigns prior to Game Day as well as leaking commercials online to get some interest and extra anticipation ahead of time. By "Pre-Gamming" advertisers get the excitement about their commercial (and product) out early allowing the excitement of their ad to match the excitement of the upcoming game to last until actual game day. By waiting until the the game itself companies limit the length of wow time they can potentially recieve to the game itself and the few days afterword. The following video by CNN contains a selection of leaked Super Bowl Ads. I am super excited to see one ad in particular: Victoria Secret. It is refreshing to see a Victoria Secret ad that doesn't appear to be covered in half naked women. I feel it is a good change that really distinguishes this ad from their usual branding and places them in line with the other brands known for Super Bowl commercials. The blog post mentioned above can be found at http://adage.com/article/special-report-super-bowl/super-bowl-ads-pre-game-game/296631/
Today while doing research for another class I stumbled across an Adobe creation known as Behance. From what I understand this online site is designed for people to share, comment, and compare creative ideas. I think this is a great place to not only get valuable feedback, but this is a great resource for students such as myself to understand what is new and innovative in the advertising world. Additionally the messaging feature could be a good source to do a little online networking on a national and international level rather than the local level we are used to. Another cool feature is a job search option where you can apply and then use your profile as a virtual portfolio for future employers to review. Overall I think this is a great tool for an advertising major such as myself to start now and keep up with as I begin my job search! I found this video on my Facebook page earlier today and was almost shocked at the ease that came with this combination! Below you will find a video in which a man named Gregory Todd takes six extremely popular country songs and mashes them all together, including a section in which all songs play at once (and let me tell you now, its hard to hear the difference)! I first accessed this video through a Facebook link directing me to an article* on buzzfeed.com which described this amazing mashup. After watching this video I was immediately shocked that an artist can follow a simple formula (resulting in extreme similarities) and know they have a hit song without the listener ever catching on, but the more I thought about it the more I realized as advertisers we use this same concept. Why stray from what works? If your brand always uses the same slogan, same actors, or same colors why would you change it. For example it is proven that the color red makes people hungry so why would you advertise for a restaurant without using the color red? This is the same concept behind the lyrics, guitar solos, and cord progressions heard within these six songs. After hearing this I am definitely going to take a step back and appreciate those artists (both musical and advertising) who are able to create a popular song or brand using unconventional ideas rather than the proven methods.

As nerve wracking as it was walking into a classroom full of new students and a new professor I am genuinely excited for my classes this semester. I am taking a six credit honors sequence called Social Product Innovation as well as three three credit courses including Advertising Copywriting, Foundations of Communication Research and Technology in Advertising and Public Relations. Technology in Advertising and Public Relations (or CAP 105) is the reason I have to write this blog, but honestly I am super excited for it. In this class we are going to learn how to professionally use social media (such as blogging, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) and other technology outlets to promote ourselves. This blog is one of our main assignments for class and on it you will see numerous assignment postings as well as reflections on class discussions and activities. In addition to my blog giving me time to reflect on class I truely believe keeping it and my other professional social media sites is going to be a key part of me finding a job or internship in my field of study. In addition to social media my Professor is requiring us to attend events at which we can network and build connections that may help us earn jobs later on. This past October I traveled down to Florida to attend the National Collegiate Entrepreneurship Organization annual conference at which I learned all about the benefits of good networking so I am ready to finally try it!
