As this class comes to an end I have begun to get super excited about building my own personal brand. In simple terms this means I am going to be creating a streamlined look for everything I do. This will include any and all social media, business cards, resumes, blogs and anything else I decide to create! In creating my brand I have decided to stick with my whole name: Amber Layn Miller. I have chosen to do this primarily because Layn is the only part of my name that isn't overwhelmingly popular, but also because I love my middle name. I haven't chosen a logo or stamp of any kind yet, but I do know it will feature yellow which is my favorite color! With my brand I plan to create a new (and less cluttered) infographic resume with the help of Piktochart. If you are interested in creating your own brand check out this site for some basic brand building tips!

This week we began our final presentations. Our assignment was to give a 10 minute presentation (accompanied by some form of media presentation) to review what we liked, didn't like, learned, and struggled with during our semester in CAP 105. It was really interesting to see what everyone else struggled and succeeded in compared to me. I also found it really interesting that some people hated projects I loved and vice versa. Below you can see my entire powerpoint presentation with the details on how I felt about CAP 105, however if you just want the rundown Ill give it to you now. Basically I loved getting to be creative, making an infographic with Piktochart was one of my favorite assignments! On the other end of the spectrum I hated the SEO and online management systems we used like Brand Yourself. Walking out of this class I am leaving with a new appreciation for branding myself, so look out for Amber Layn Miller, because one day I will make it big! I apologize in for any and all formatting errors that arose from putting my PowerPoint online. My final cut movie creation would not upload via my PowerPoint, however you can view it in its original blog post here. Pictures come from a combination of my work with Photoshop, Piktochart, Final Cut Pro X and Brand Yourself.
This week I got to learn how to use Tweetdeck. Tweetdeck is a really cool site that lets you schedule tweets for any day and time you wish. This means next time you have two funny thoughts in a row you can post one now and schedule one to post tomorrow when you may be a little less entertaining! Additionally, Tweetdeck can be used to monitor other social media sites and put all of your online profiles in one place! Kind of cool right?! Check out all of my scheduled posts and learn more about Tweetdeck below! As the semester and my time in CAP 105 come to an end I must decide what to do with my blog. I have enjoyed blogging throughout this semester, but unfortunately I do not see myself continuing my blog in the future. I will keep it open to hold my site name incase I decide to begin blogging again, but I simply do not have the time to continue with it while I am in school. In my opinion keeping my blog may be a good way to help employers see who I am beyond my resume (a sort of online resume if you will), but I fear that my lack of time commitment will only make them see lazy posts that don't represent my full abilities. In honor of my final three weeks as a blogger I will be throwing it back to my very first post in which I thought I would continue blogging forever. You may remember my first post about the site brand yourself, well this is post number two. In the couple week between posts I was spoused to be improving my grade by completing the suggested optimization techniques. Well I failed. I completed all of the optimization techniques I could, and yet my score went down. Unfortunately a lot of techniques weren't possible for me or weren't recognized by their system. For example, this blog isn't easily connected to my name. Brand yourself recommended that I change the name of my site from blogbyamber.weebly.com to ambermiller.weebly.com. Unfortunately, that name is already taken. While my search results don't seem to be getting any better, this assignment has made me rethink my name online. Currently I use a combination of my first middle and last name on all of my sites, but not consistently. Moving forward I am going to try to use my full name on everything (Amber Layn Miller) since that seems to be a little more unique.
This week in CAP 105 I learned how to make infographics. Before today I never knew making one could be so easy, and FREE! I decided to make my infographic on the social media outlet of sharing data. To make my infographic I used a template from Piktochart and pulled my information from two online sources (1,2). I then customized the images to match my topic and changed the graph styles to better represent my topic. Learn how to use Piktochart and check out my Piktochart below! When was the last time you took a look at your resume? If its looking a little traditional, it may be time for an update! I recently applied for some new job positions and was shocked at how boring my old resume was! Before renovating your resume design, I suggest checking out a list of resume tips to make sure you have your content down. Then think about your profession. Is your career path one that strives for creativity, or precision. I am looking to go into marketing and advertising when I graduate, so adding a little pop of color and a monogram offers just a pinch of creativity, which is likely to stand out to the advertising companies who would be looking to hire me. Make sure however you renovate your resume, you stay true to you!
May apply? More like do apply! Have you ever actually taken the time to read everything listed in the terms and conditions? I sure haven't! You might think "oh its no big deal", but it is a big deal! This week in class we watched a documentary called "Terms and Conditions May Apply". If you ever have some free time I highly suggest you watch it and see just whats in those terms your signing. I must say I wasn't too surprised with everything they reveled, but I was still angered that I had to accept such conditions just to use my favorite products. In case your not aware, majority of companies make you okay the storage of all of your information and data, your surveillance, and even use any of your data without further consent. If any or all of this angers you, check out the trailer below, watch the documentary, and prepare to be furious! Did you know the cloud is used for more than just storing your data? Before class this week, I didn't. I thought the virtual cloud was a device for purely storing music, pictures and documents, but it is so much more! One of the best examples of more than storage I can think of is Adobe's Creative Cloud. Aside from storing your data, subscribing to the Creative Cloud gives you access to the entire Adobe Creative Suite wherever you are! With the Adobe Creative Cloud customers can start a project on their desktop, take it to their laptop, and then to their mobile for only one monthly cost instead of purchasing it separately for each system. I really like having that kind of flexibility, plus with the storage space they give you I might just have to try it! This week in class we learned the basics of InDesign. InDesign is an Adobe Creative Suite Product used to create an edit print publications. Our project was to take the Saguatuck Center for the Arts 2013 Annual Report and make the following three corrections:
1. Change Kathy Kirby's name to "Whitney Valentine, Exhibitions & Education Manager" I completed this step by copying the replacement text above, highlighting the text I wanted to change, and pasting over it. 2. Swap out the clay woman photo for another photo we were given To complete this step, first I saved the image I was given to my desktop, and then I relinked the existing photo slot to my image. 3. In the graph change one instance of 35% to 36% and change the 24% to 23%. For this step, I simply erased the last digit in each number and replaced it with the new value. In the end I thought using InDesign was fairly simple! You can see my before and after photos showing my corrections below. |
